In the past 15 years or so, podcasts have erupted in popularity. Similar to listening to talk radio, podcasts audio shows where people discuss topics or tell stories about various topics. The big difference is that podcasts are available at your leisure, with shows often releasing on weekly or bi-weekly schedules. All you have to do is download them and press play whenever you’re ready. If you’re a veteran who wants to listen to other veterans discuss life in the military, or how they’re tackling the change from being in service to civilian life, podcasts are a great way to do so. Here are a few of the best podcasts by veterans and for veterans.
Host Sean Hansen has one goal: helping veterans, active military and first responders (as well as their families) have better lives. Sean’s mentality is that these individuals have served us, the people of the United States, in a myriad of ways and that the least we can do is help them as well. Sean looks at deeper and harder to talk about topics such as adjusting to civilian life after serving and self-help issues to much more common things like staying healthy, managing finances, or overcoming trauma related to the military.
A podcast featuring a slew of veterans as hosts, Veterans Helping Veterans is all about helping veterans navigate Veteran Affairs. Many of the speakers come from veteran service organizations or the private sector, and there are even a few from Veteran Affairs itself! Common topics for discussion include how Veteran Affairs works, what can be done to improve the system, and how to navigate their system of claims and regulations.
This podcast is run by Team RWB, a charitable non-profit, and is all about promoting wellness and activity among veterans. Team RWB is a rather large organization with over 160,000 members, all who have a passion for improving the lives of veterans. Many of the guest hosts are experts in various fields, with popular topics including Crossfit, medical cannabis, and mental wellness.
Hosted by retired Navy SEAL officer Jocko Willink, the Jocko Podcast is a show where Jocko shares his experience in leadership and gives lessons about how to be a better leader, how to take ownership of something and ways to become and stay motivated. Jocko is all about getting straight to the content, much of which is very serious and focused. On top of that, Jocko is also a part of many other similar endeavors, such as Echelon Front, a site that features customizable leadership field exercises.
