Gun violence is a big problem in the United States. Nearly 40,000 people lose their lives due to guns each year. Mass shootings are far too common. There have been assaults in the retail, entertainment, and educational sectors, such as Wal-Mart, Sandy Hook Elementary School, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, and the Pulse Nightclub in the past decade, to name a few. President Joe Biden has a plan to stop gun violence.
The Biden Plan
President Biden wants to hold gun makers more accountable for whom they distribute guns. Currently, these groups are protected from civil liability for their products. One of the changes will be to end that protection. The President also wants to get weapons of war out of our communities. He will ban the making and selling of assault weapons, regulate current assault weapon sales and distribution, and limit the number of guns a person can buy each month.
Prevent Gun Violence
One way to reduce violence is to make sure guns don’t wind up in the wrong hands in the first place. President Biden supports intensifying gun background checks and closing loopholes. He’ll also ban the selling of guns and ammunition online.
Guns and Domestic Violence Don’t Mix
Domestic violence is a major social problem, with women five times more likely to be killed if a gun is involved. Current laws do not protect women enough from gun fatalities caused by a known abuser. President Biden will stop convicted abusers from buying guns, remove the boyfriend loophole, and create a task force to prevent sexual harassment.
Use Guns Safely
President Biden believes gun owners should be responsible for their guns and use them safely. He wants all firearms sold to be smart guns that require the user’s fingerprint to work. He also wants to stop adults from putting guns in minors’ hands. In addition, gun owners must store guns the right way.
Make Law Enforcement a Partner
Biden’s plan makes government officials a part of the solution. He wants the FBI to let state and local officers know when someone fails a background check. He’ll enlist the U.S. Department of Justice, including the ATF, to enforce our gun laws.
Gun Violence and Mental Health
The final piece of President Biden’s plan focuses on gun violence and mental health. He’ll put more focus on gun-related suicides, and the impact violence and trauma have on communities.
